Dear Secret Mutant letters!

As secret_mutant is taking place on AO3, there's a slightly more limited space to write about prompts and likes and dislikes than there is otherwise. Taking a cue from other anonymous exchanges hosted on AO3, we thought we'd offer you the opportunity to get a little more in-depth about your requests, if you so choose, and write a letter to your gifter.

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, your Dear Secret Mutant letter will be a post hosted at your blogging platform of choice (LJ, DW, tumblr, whatever other hip thing the kids are using these days) that generally lays out what you like to see in stories, what you don't like, some additional ideas you have, etc. Some writers/artists find an exact prompt easier to create for than a more general one, while others feel the opposite way, so it's just another way of making it clear what you like and giving your gifter some options. They're also helpful if you know you're going to be busy or out of town during when gifts are posted, so your gifter knows not to expect a thank you comment until you return.

The best way to get an idea of what to include in your letter is to browse others. Here is a link to the 'Dear Secret Mutant' post for last year's exchange. Feel free to browse some of those to get a feel for how letters are composed.

"Dear Secret Mutant" letters are totally optional. If you feel like your sign-up stands on its own, don't feel obligated to write one!

If you do decide to write a letter, please leave it in the comments on this post in the following format:

NOTE: Sometimes LJ marks legit comments on a high-traffic post such as this one as "suspicious." I'm going through a few times a day and approving all the suspicious comments, so if your comment doesn't come through immediately, never fear--I will get to it the next time I check!

(If it's been a couple days and it's still not showing up, shoot me a comment/email/ask on tumblr and I'll see what's up.)

Secret Mutant 2015 Timeline

The official Secret Mutant 2015 timeline is as follows:

Sign-ups begin: Sunday, September 27, 2015
Sign-ups end: Monday, October 12, 2015
Assignments go out: by Sunday, October 18 at the latest
Assignments due: 11:59pm on Sunday, November 22
Archive opens: Monday, November 30
Authors/Artists revealed: Monday, December 7
Secret Mutant Madness open for posting: mid-November to Monday, December 7

All of those dates are contingent on gifts getting in on time. If we have outstanding pinch-hits, the archive won’t open until they’re all in. I know people have questioned the long wait between stories being due and the archive opening in the past, and that’s the reasoning behind it: I won’t open the archive until every single person has a gift, so we need to build in time for pinch-hitting.

The rules are basically the same as years past, and the usual information will be forthcoming when sign-ups open. Until then, feel free to spread the word! Sign-ups begin in about two weeks!

Hello, secret mutants! Here is a post where we can offer our beta-ing skills to mutants in need.

Since we can't reveal details about our fics publicly when looking for a beta, we can come here instead to find a contact list of people who are willing to beta!

Please remember, of course, that the people on this list may have already received some other requests, so don't be insulted if the first person you contact can't do it -- just move onto the next person.

If you would like to offer your beta services, please reply to this post with:

2014 Pinch-hit sign-ups!

If you're interesting in being put on the pinch-hitter list, this is the place to sign-up!

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, pinch-hitters are called in one at a time as participants default. We'll email the whole list with the sign-up and the first person to email back claiming the request gets it. There will probably be a couple right after assignments come out and a few more along the way, but the bulk will come on November 30 when gifts are due and we see who hasn't finished in time. Those pinch-hits will need to have a super fast turnaround time--the gift needs to be back in our hands six days after we give you the request in order for the archive to open on time.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in helping us with, please comment here with the following information:

Secret Mutant 2014 is here!

Hello, internet! Welcome to Secret Mutant, a Secret Generic Holiday Figurehead exchange for all the X-Men: First Class trilogy fic/art your little heart could desire. WE WILL MAKE YOUR HEART GROW THREE SIZES.

Those interested in writing an XMFC/DoFP fic or making XMFC/DoFP art for someone else and receiving some in exchange will sign up from September 28 to October 11. After sign-ups close, the mods will match participants based on their likes and requests and you'll have six weeks to work to fill your recipient's request. The works will then be posted anonymously for everyone to lavish with praise. On December 13th, the creators will be revealed and we'll all pat each other on the back for being super awesome.

Sounds great, right? I certainly think so! If you think so as well, read on for more information!

Sign-ups: September 28 - October 11
Assignments Out: October 18
Assignments Due: November 29
Archive Opens: December 6
Author/Artist Reveals: December 13

Assignments will go out on October 18, after which you'll have six weeks to work a present that fits your recipient's request. Once all assignments are in, we'll start the pinch hits going and posting will be the following week.

FAQCollapse )

Rules
1. Don't be a jerk. The number one rule for all fic fests, I feel. Remember you are making a present for someone else and someone is making one for you, so please be courteous both to your recipient and to your gifter.

2. Building on that, no character bashing, please. For anyone. Don't request it and please don't write it.

3. If you purposely write a story/make a picture that is intended as malicious towards your recipient, you'll be be banned and a pinch-hitter will be called in.

4. Moving away from the jerky rules, fic length is a minimum of 1000 words. Feel free to write more, if you wish!

5. You can request up to four things but one of them MUST be gen.

6. Your story MUST be complete. No works in progress, no prologues to a longer fic, no chapters of a larger story.

7. Gifts must be in by 11:59PM EST on November 29th. Anyone who does not have a gift uploaded by that time will be automatically defaulted and the assignment will be given to a pinch-hitter.

8. The exchange is anonymous, so please don't reveal who you're writing for until it's officially revealed on AO3!

9. Understandably, then, don't post your fic/art elsewhere until after the reveal, at which point you should feel free to post it wherever you'd like!

And that's that! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Otherwise you can sign-up here!

that's a wrap - THANK YOU :)

Well, that's a wrap on this year's Secret Mutant! I hope that everyone participated had as much fun as I had. I can't thank you all enough for playing along and making this exchange a success, because it wouldn't be half as wonderful without all of your contributions ♥

You can see a complete list of the gifts, now with authors/artists attached, below:
Secret Mutant Collection
Secret Mutant Madness Collection

Altogether there were 53 gifts in the main collection and 25 in the madness collection for a total of seventy-eight new fanworks. That's not too shabby!

A few extra thank yous - I cannot adequately describe in words how incredibly much I appreciate everyone who volunteered to pinch-hit. Without pinch-hitters, this exchange would go down in flames and I would have a nervous breakdown. It is such a relief to know that there are people I can trust to write a fic in as little as three days, if needed. So, special thanks to aesc, heyjupiter/twentyghosts, Kernezelda, mixture, keire_ke, manic_intent, speakmefair, afrocurl, and littledust for stepping up to the plate when they were needed the most.

Thanks additionally to everyone on Twitter for talking me off of the ledge several times - Unforgotten, cygnaut, heyjupiter/twentyghosts, littledust, firstlightofeos, and pearlo. Thanks to Pearl, too, for dealing with me the weekend that assignments were due. I literally was sitting on her couch, refreshing and fretting.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Secret Mutant Madness, everyone who signal boosted and reblogged information, everyone who commented on stories, and everyone who left Kudos.

Again, I hope everyone had a great Secret Mutant experience. This fandom is pretty cool, and I hope you enjoyed the exchange and madness as much as I did. We'll be back next fall for Secret Mutant number four :)

I left the Secret Mutant Madness collection open for a few extra hours, but it's now officially closed with 25 stories! You can check them all out here! Those will remain anonymous for the next couple of hours and be officially revealed at the same time as the regular Secret Mutant collection.

Right now, the aim is to reveal authors/artists at about 12pm EST, but I'm going out and will be doing it from my phone, so all of that is contingent on whether or not I can get a signal XD But, fingers crossed, authors and artists should be revealed at 12pm EST.

If you haven't already, please take a moment to acknowledge your gift. Even if you defaulted! I swear, there's no shame in not being able to finish and you are absolutely allowed to read and enjoy both your gift and other gifts in the archive even if circumstance left you unable to complete your own assignment. Everyone worked very hard to create all of the gifts in the archive and acknowledgement is always nice :)

So, take some time to peruse the Secret Mutant archive and also the Secret Mutant Madness archive one last time while they're anon, and then get ready to learn the authors/artists of the works at about noon EST! When I get home tonight, we'll have a proper wrap-up post. Thanks, guys!

I hope you're all enjoying all the stories and art in the Secret Mutant archive! Here are a few things that have come up that you should be aware of!

  • For some reason, many people did not get an AO3 email with a link directly to their gift. I think most people just ended up at the archive and found their gifts anyway, but if you're still waiting on that email, you can click here to go to the archive page and put your username in the search window above the list of works. It will bring your gift up! You can also get there via the "gifts" tab on your AO3 dashboard. (It's on the left near the bottom!)

  • Please please please remember to take the time to comment on your gift and thank your Secret Mutant. Even if you defaulted. Someone took the time to make something for you, and it's only polite to thank them for their effort.

  • Remember that Secret Mutant Madness is open until Saturday! You don't have to have participated in Secret Mutant to write/art for Secret Mutant Madness! So tell all your friends!

If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! And now feel free to go back to enjoying the archive :D

The Secret Mutant Archive is Open!!

HURRAH! You should all receive emails shortly linking you directly to your gifts, but the archive is officially open! There are fifty-three wonderful shiny new XMFC fanworks just waiting to be viewed, right here!

So please please please go read your gift and thank your gifter for their time and effort!

A few things to keep in mind:
  • Even if you defaulted, someone still put time and effort into making you a present. There's no shame or embarrassment in defaulting and don't feel that by dropping out it means you should slink away from the archive. If nothing else, please thank the person who made you a gift :)

  • Gifters - please give your recipient a day or two to comment. It's a super busy time of the year and lots of people are traveling or caught up in work or rushing to get all their holiday prep complete. I know the time before they comment is torture, but try to be patient ;D

  • Even if the present is not exactly what you imagined, someone worked hard on it, and please politely acknowledge that, even if it's not your cup of tea.

  • Kudos are love, but comments are even better. Comment on what you can, but please at least try and comment on the gift intended for you rather than just leaving a Kudos.

Additionally, the Secret Mutant Madness archive is ALSO open now, but people will be continuing to add to that for the next week, so keep your eyes on this space as it's likely to grow!

So please, go look at all the fantastic new fanworks and feel free to rec and squee and keep writing Secret Mutant Madness stories as the week goes on!

As usually, if you have any questions, please ask! And with that, I am taking my death cold and going back to bed :)

Reminder: Secret Mutant Madness is open for posting from now until December 21.

Secret Mutant Madness is a great way to create fanworks for people in fandom you admire, generate new material in the months before the new movie, and finish up projects you couldn't get done in time for Secret Mutant proper! Anyone can participate in Secret Mutant Madness, regardless of whether you're participating in the Secret Mutant Exchange.

Below you'll find a link to all of the prompts submitted for Secret Mutant, sorted by the person who submitted them. You can look through those prompts and use any of them to make an additional gift for the person who requested them. You can use them to make something for a friend, to make something for someone in fandom you admire, or just because you find yourself inspired by the prompt. There's no word count minimum or maximum and no claiming necessary--write whatever you want and upload it to this collection!

For more detailed information, click here!

Instructions

To upload your story to Secret Mutant Madness, you'll follow most of the steps in the AO3 Tutorial. Where it differs is "Step Nine: Associations." Secret Mutant Madness stories aren't assignments, so there's no ticky box for assignment. Instead, where it says "Post to Collections / Challenges" you'll type "secret_mutant_madness_2013" and where it says "Gift this work to" you'll type the name listed in your prompt. That way, it will be added to the collection and an automatic email will go out to the recipient informing them that you've fulfilled their prompt!

With all that said and done, here is the list of prompts, sorted alphabetically by participant:

submissions are closed!

And, at 10:20-something EST, I closed submissions :) Thank you to everyone who participated!

I'm about to send out pinch-hit requests for those who were defaulted. If you were defaulted and you're close to finishing your assignment, please consider uploading it to Secret Mutant Madness as an additional treat! The more fanworks the better, right?

What happens next? Well, all the pinch-hits that are about to go out will have a deadline of 10am EST on Saturday, December 14. Around noon EST, once all the pinch-hits are in, the archive will open! Fanworks will remain anonymous for a week, and on December 21 around noon (or around whenever I get a chance to do it as I'm traveling home somewhere in there), the authors and artist will be revealed.

Secret Mutant Madness will remain open for anonymous posting until whenever the authors/artists are revealed on the main collection. Once that happens, posting will close on Secret Mutant Madness and authors/artists will be revealed over there, too.

(Remember, as always, anyone can participate in Secret Mutant Madness, even people who didn't sign up for Secret Mutant and there is no minimum word count required!)

So, thank you again to everyone who's participated and let me know if you have any questions!

tiny extension!

Hello, folks! I hope you're as excited as I am for the approaching deadline!

However, I come bearing a bit of a respite for those of you who are rushing to finish! I'm extending the deadline overnight! You now have until 10am EST to finish up your assignments. So take a deep breath, have a drink, and keep working! You have time!

To answer a couple questions that have come up:

  • Starting twenty-four hours after the deadline (so sometime Monday morning), you will be able to edit your uploaded assignments. So if you catch a typo or a misplaced comma, don't fret, just sit on it for another day or so and then the collection will be available for edits!

  • AO3 has been having some issues with letting me in to approve of submissions. Don't worry if your submission has yet to be approved! All submitted assignments will be counted as complete, as long as they meet the challenge requirements, and will not be defaulted at the deadline.

  • Pinch-hitters are still needed! Click here to sign up!

  • Just a reminder that stories must be at least 1000 words long. There is a word count right on your story once it is posted on the AO3, so please double check and make sure you meet the minimum before submitting!

That's all for now! Enjoy your extension! All outstanding assignments will be defaulted at 10am EST tomorrow and pinch-hitters will be assigned! Have a good night! :D

thirty hours! (give or take)

There is just over one day until the Secret Mutant deadline!

>As a reminder, all assignments are due 11:59pm, EST on Saturday, December 7 (What time is that for me?). If your assignment is not in by then you will be automatically defaulted. But never fear! If you are close to being done, but not completely done yet, you can always upload the result to the Secret Mutant Madness Collection any time between now and December 21!

Some reminders:

  • Pleeeaaaase let me know as soon as you can if you can’t make that deadline. This is a no-consequence exchange—I totally understand if something comes up and you have to default! You won’t be punished and you can absolutely participate in future years, or even write things for Secret Mutant Madness. Sometimes a particular set of prompts just doesn’t work. Just, please, let me know as soon as possible so I can get a pinch-hit in place.

  • You can still sign up for the pinch-hit list! If you’re done with your assignment, or haven’t signed up for the exchange but suddenly have time on your hands, or you think you’ll be done quickly and know you can write or draw something pretty quickly, you can still have your name added to the list here. There’s no obligation to take any pinch-hit that comes by, but as we get closer to the deadline, we’re really going to need people who can step up and help us if a prompt catches their eye. I will be eternally grateful ♥

  • This is an anonymous exchange. Please refrain from posting WiP excerpts, pictures of incomplete art, titles, summaries, prompts, word counts, etc in public posts. I know it seems silly, but the anonymity is half the fun, and it is in the rules that you need to stay anonymous until the reveal.
  • I am currently out of town, and thus not sitting in front of my computer for 16 hours a day like I normally do, so responses to questions might not be as immediate as usual! Still, I’m checking the SM email regularly, so please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

  • Also, remember that SECRET MUTANT MADNESS is still going on, and you can totally participate in that regardless of whether or not you’re participating in the Secret Mutant exchange. More details about that in this post!

And that’s all from me until tomorrow! As usual, please let me know if you have any questions!

Secret Mutant Madness 2013!

And now for Secret Mutant Madness!!

For those of you who have done Yuletide Madness or Remix Madness, the format of Secret Mutant Madness will follow those very closely. For those unfamiliar with the format, here is how it will work:

Below you'll find a link to all of the prompts submitted for Secret Mutant, sorted by the person who submitted them. You can look through those prompts and use any of them to make an additional gift for the person who requested them. You can use them to make something for a friend, to make something for someone in fandom you admire, or just because you find yourself inspired by the prompt. There's no word count minimum or maximum and no claiming necessary--write whatever you want and upload it to this collection!
Additional Guidelines

  • Secret Mutant Madness will run until 8am EST on Saturday, December 21.
  • There is no "claiming" necessary. Anyone can use any prompt and all prompts can be used multiple times.
  • There is no word limit for fic. You can write a 100 word drabble, a 300 word ficlet, or a 30k epic.
  • Similarly, if you're an artist, you can submit what I am going to call "sketches." Meaning that they don't have to be colored/painted/finished or whatever, it can be doodles or more preliminary work.
  • Works will remain anonymous until December 21 at 12pm EST, when authors/artists are revealed on the main Secret Mutant collection.
  • Most importantly, ANYONE CAN PARTICIPATE IN SECRET MUTANT MADNESS! If you defaulted on your Secret Mutant assignment, you can try to finish it for Secret Mutant Madness or pick another prompt and write something else all together. If you didn't think you'd have time to get something done by the Secret Mutant deadline, but now you find you have free time, you can participate! If you generally write shorter works and avoided Secret Mutant because of the 1000 word minimum, you are more than welcome in Secret Mutant Madness. You do not have to be a participant of Secret Mutant to play!
  • (Because you don't have to be a participant, please tell all your friends that they are welcome to play! Feel free to pass this around Tumblr, Twitter, etc!)
  • Similarly, if this is totally not your style, there's no obligation or requirement to participate.
